What is GIN?

Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Gin, IN, G-to-the-I-N

In technical terms, United States Gin is defined as a spirit no less than 40% ABV containing the botanical, Juniper berries.

While gin has been a staple in the world of cocktails for centuries, it’s experiencing a resurgence in popularity. With its botanical notes and versatile character, gin has captured the imaginations of mixologists and consumers. But what exactly is gin, and what makes it so special?  I’ll tell ya!

Back to the roots:

Gin’s origins can be traced back to the Netherlands in the 17th century. Initially known as “jenever” or “genever,” this early precursor to modern gin was used for its medicinal properties. However, it didn’t take long for its appeal to extend beyond the apothecary.

Dutch soldiers serving in the Eighty Years’ War with Spain would drink jenever for its warming effects, leading to the term “Dutch courage.”

Gin’s popularity spread to England when Dutch King William III took the English throne in 1689. The spirit underwent some transformations in England, with the addition of botanicals like juniper, coriander, and citrus peels. This gave birth to what we now know as gin.

Modern day

Gin is primarily made from distilled grain alcohol, which serves as the neutral base for the spirit. What sets gin apart is its infusion of botanicals, particularly juniper berries. Juniper is the key botanical that gives gin its distinctive piney and slightly citrusy flavor.

In other words, gin is a sexy, fun, and flavorful vodka.

The US market doesn’t have strict regulations on what qualifies spirits to be classified as gin. So as long as we have 40% and Juniper berries are a part of the distillation process, we’re golden. That’s one of many reasons why this spirit is so beautiful. You can get as funky and creative with your ingredients as you want.

Cheers

Gin is a spirit with a rich history and a world of flavors waiting to be sipped. Whether you enjoy it in classic cocktails like the Gin and Tonic or martini (preferably ordered filthy) gin’s diverse range of styles and botanical combinations offers something for everyone.

So, grab a glass of this juniper-infused concoction, and appreciate the wild world of gin.

Cheers to this timeless spirit!
